Steve Conner's Dirty Weekend SSTC: an IRFP460 half-bridge Tesla coil

a weekend from the junk box · IRFP460 half bridge · UCC37321/2 · antenna and 74HC14 · spring 2004

“I decided that it was long past time I built a real SSTC, as in oscillator-driven rather than disruptive. So I decided to see what I could lash up from the contents of my junk box in one weekend.” The page was archived on 1 Jul 2004 and the coil had already been to the Derby Teslathon in May, so both weekends fall in the spring of 2004. The junkyard was seeded, Junkyard Wars style, with 25 IRFP460s, five UCC37321 and five UCC37322 driver chips and a secondary wound earlier. The rest really was junk: a Pentium II heatsink, capacitors from a dead motor drive and a dead UPS, ferrite from a dead monitor and a microwave oven, two antennas off portable radios, 555s and 74HC14s. Weekend one produced a gate-drive transformer wound on a core boiled out of a monitor supply (“ferrite soup, anyone?”) and the antenna-feedback half bridge of the day. Conner names no one on this page. His site's thanks go to Terry Fritz, Richie Burnett, Alan Sharp and Jimmy Hynes, so the card hangs here. What a mess, he writes, but it works. The photograph of dead chips shows what it cost.
