Mighty Ramp: a staccato QCW driver with a half-wave doubler

half-wave doubler · staccato · injection-locked oscillator · IXDD609 · 2026

The same idea as the Staccato above (a QCW ramp taken from the mains rather than made by a modulator), engineered as a finished, reproducible board. Zak W, who publishes as QZW Labs, signs the sheet in full: “QZW Labs / ZAK W”, title “MIGHTY RAMP DRIVER”, A3, dated 2026-06-02, Rev v1.0, KiCad 9.0.4. Every field of the title block is filled in.

The drawing is divided into labelled blocks. LOGIC & GATE DRIVE POWER: 16-24 VDC in, 20 V recommended, MC78M05BDTG. SECONDARY FEEDBACK | STARTUP OSCILLATION: an N87 core wound 3:30 into an MCP6564 comparator, with RV1 setting a free-running startup oscillation of 300-650 kHz. This is the “injection locked oscillator” the write-up describes, and the coil’s own feedback takes over from it about 200 µs into the burst. GATE DRIVE: two IXDD609SIA at 35 V/9 A onto the GDT, noted on the sheet as “can drive IGBT half bridge or full bridge, tested with FGH75T65S IGBTs”. BRIDGE PWR INPUT | DC SENSE & STACCATO INTERRUPTER: an NE555P whose BPS is set by one capacitor (4.7 µF = 30 Hz, 10 µF = 20 Hz) through a 74LVC2G74DP latch. OVER CURRENT PROTECTION uses a Murata 53020C CT, with the threshold arithmetic printed on the drawing (“80 A × 5 Ω / 200 turns = 2 V”). UNDER VOLTAGE LOCKOUT has its own table of divider settings.

Published as a complete set of files: the KiCad 9 project (schematic, board, project files), production files (Gerbers, BOM.csv, CPL.csv) prepared for JLCPCB with Bouni’s KiCad JLCPCB Tools, an interactive HTML BOM, an assembly PDF, a Google-Sheets BOM, a Mouser cart, and a 3mf for printing the base the board is photographed on. No licence of any kind is stated anywhere in it. His own measured figures: a half bridge run to 90 A on a pair of FGH75T65S, and about 10 A at 120 VAC at full 30 Hz BPS, roughly 1.2 kW.

The author asks for builds, not orders: “if you build the Mighty Ramp and would like me to feature your build on my website, please email me photos of it.” The page also gives the setup procedure, with test points and example waveforms for every threshold. It notes that OCP, UVLO and the oscillator can all be set with a multimeter instead of a scope.
