Firestorm108's M87: a 170 kW peak DRSSTC, open KiCad

170 kW peaks · four custom boards · KiCad sources published · 2026

A dual-resonant coil its author rates at 170 kW peaks, published as four custom PCBs with both production and source files: the Universal Driver “M87”, an optical interrupter, a multi-mini capacitor and current transformers. The driver’s own KiCad project is in the repository (UD_M87.kicad_sch at 326 kB alongside the board and project files), and the schematic is also posted as an image, which is what is shown here.

The sheet is laid out in named blocks: POWER SUPPLY (20 VAC through an HBS1010 bridge into L7824 / L7809 / L7805), INTERRUPTER on an HFBR-2521Z fibre receiver into a 74HC14, FEEDBACK with SS14 and SMBJ5337B clamps, OVERCURRENT DETECTION on an LM311 with a 10 k trim, LOGIC built from 74HC14 / 74HC08 / 74HC74 producing GDA and GDB, and GATE DRIVE (a UCC27423 into IRF9540/IRF540 totem pairs onto the gate-drive transformer at J4).

The repository has no licence. Every image in it is a render or a layout screenshot (the opening figure is a CAD view of the whole machine, not a photograph), so this card shows the driver’s layout. The author also asks that it not be copied: “I do not advise anyone to replicate this… DO NOT REPLICATE!”. That is a safety notice, not a licence restriction.
