What changed because of them
UD3 is Ward's driver gone programmable. The CY8CKIT-059 port of April 2018 is co-credited with Ward directly. The chip is a PSoC5LP, CPU and FPGA fabric together, running FreeRTOS, with an onboard interrupter, USB that enumerates as both a MIDI device and a serial console, master and slave operation, and a built-in frequency sweep that plots the primary and secondary response for tuning.
The forum thread documenting it runs to more than two hundred replies and is still active in 2026, and the firmware repository is still maintained. The hardware repository is the weaker half: the sheet carries the right parts and nets, but the author labels it not finished. The tree says so rather than presenting it as the schematic.
Max Zuidberg's Syntherrupter and Thorben Zethoff's UD3.1 grew out of the same repository.
